RealRoots is a structured offline-friendship service for women who want a group and a plan, not another app full of swipes.

## What it does

RealRoots asks members about themselves, matches them into a group in their city, provides a guide and runs a six-week series of curated experiences. The company says the membership also includes social clubs, one-to-one matches and an online forum. The guarantee is part of the product design. If a member does not make at least one connection they are genuinely excited about within six weeks, RealRoots says it will repeat the matching and experience steps for free. That is a clearer promise than “meet people nearby,” even though the company’s definition of a meaningful connection remains personal.

## Why I’d look closer

The product solves the coordination problem. A matching algorithm alone does not create a friendship. RealRoots handles the group, guide, venue and conversation structure so the member only has to show up and participate.

The founders’ backgrounds make sense for a consumer marketplace. The [YC profile](https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/realroots) describes Dorothy Li as a Stanford business graduate and former founding-team member at Cambly, and Tara Kappel as an early product and data leader at Brilliant.

The current homepage says the service is available in 150+ cities, shows a 4.8 App Store rating and publishes alumni testimonials. Those are site-reported or platform-displayed signals, not a controlled retention study. [RealRoots testimonials](https://www.therealroots.com/testimonials)

## What could make it the wrong choice

The service is city- and schedule-dependent. The quality of a match depends on having enough compatible members and a guide who can create a comfortable group. The public material does not show pricing in the checked packet, so a member should confirm the local series, fees, cancellation terms and next available group.

The guarantee reduces risk, but it does not remove the emotional or time cost of attending a group that does not fit.

## My editorial take

I would shortlist RealRoots for someone who wants a structured offline route to new friendships and is willing to commit to six weeks. I would not choose it for casual browsing or a purely online community. The product’s advantage is the choreography: matching, a human guide and repeated experiences. The tradeoff is that the service only works when the local network has enough density to make that choreography feel natural.
