NODI is trying to make grid flexibility feel like a plug-in product.

## What it does

The current [NODI homepage](https://www.nodienergy.com/) describes a smart battery that charges when energy is cheap and releases power when prices rise. It is designed for homes, small businesses and larger grid deployments. Existing supported batteries can join NODI’s virtual power plant, while new customers can reserve a NODI unit.

The product has three layers. At home, it shifts consumption and aims to make bills more predictable. At network scale, NODI aggregates batteries into a distributed resource. For data centers and grid projects, the company describes dispatchable capacity that can be deployed faster than conventional reinforcement.

## Why I’d look closer

The current consumer path is unusually concrete. The site says a NODI reservation costs £69 and is refundable, and that existing supported-battery customers can participate for at least £120/€120 per year. It also advertises a commercial path and a grid path for developers, data centers and local councils. These are company-stated offers and targets, not a guarantee of payback or grid availability.

The founder background matches the hardware problem. The [about page](https://www.nodienergy.com/about) describes Borong Hu as a power-electronics researcher with manufacturing and energy experience, and Catherine Jeong as a second-time industrial-tech founder with energy, climate and policy experience. The YC launch also describes a hardware, software and intelligence stack rather than a software-only demand-response product.

## What I’d ask

I would ask about installation, supported tariffs, battery safety, export rules, warranty, availability by country and the conditions behind every savings or payback number. A plug-in product still sits inside a regulated energy system. The buyer needs the grid and hardware boundary, not only the app story.

## My editorial take

Shortlist NODI if you want a concrete way to think about flexible storage at household, business or grid scale. The strongest wedge is deployment friction: ordinary sockets and existing batteries are easier to explain than a new infrastructure project. The open question is whether the unit economics and local rules stay attractive outside the company’s best examples.
