MinusX: agentic BI that works inside the data stack you already have
Open-source and managed agentic BI for founders and teams using dashboards, notebooks, warehouses, Slack, and MCP.
Published · Updated
MinusX is agentic business intelligence for founders who want an analyst to work inside the data tools they already have. The buying decision is whether that is more useful than moving to another analytics platform: MinusX's strongest pitch is that it can use your existing stack, learn the business context, and return to the work through Slack, MCP, or a browser.
What it does
MinusX describes a data agent that builds dashboards, answers questions, edits Jupyter notebooks and Metabase questions, creates narratives and slides, and sends alerts. The current product also offers open-source self-hosting, a managed cloud, a knowledge base, and evals for testing recurring answers (MinusX homepage; MinusX context docs).
| Fact | What the public sources say |
|---|---|
| Buyer | Founders, product teams, analysts, and operators without enough data-science bandwidth |
| Working surface | Dashboards, Jupyter, Metabase, Slack, MCP, reports, and data stories |
| Deployment | Free self-hosted open source or managed cloud |
| Public pricing | Founders $40/user/month; Team $600/month for 20 users; Enterprise custom |
| Founders | Vivek Aithal and Sreejith Puthanpurayil |
Why it fits
The practical advantage is avoiding a migration project. A founder can ask about growth, finance, product, operations, marketing, or pipeline using the same warehouse and tools the team already uses. The knowledge-base layer matters because definitions such as “active user,” fiscal year, or exclusion rules are where an otherwise polished data answer goes wrong. The homepage points to a UC Berkeley EPIC DataAgentBench result, but a benchmark is not a guarantee for a company's schema or metric definitions (MinusX homepage).
The pricing also creates a clear choice. Self-hosting is attractive when the team wants control and has infrastructure capacity. Founders is simple for a small operator; Team adds pooled credits, workspaces, and eval tools. Enterprise adds dedicated support, custom integrations, and on-premise deployment. The cloud plans consume agent credits, while BYO model keys lower the listed plan price but move model-cost management to the buyer (MinusX pricing).
Founder-market fit is unusually legible. YC describes Aithal as a research engineer on an open-source autonomous-driving agent at comma.ai, and Puthanpurayil as having worked on ads delivery and ranking at Meta and ride-hailing infrastructure at Gojek (YC company profile). That background explains the focus on agents that operate tools rather than only produce chat answers.
Short version: shortlist MinusX if the bottleneck is turning an existing data stack into daily decisions. Treat the context setup, eval coverage, and permission model as part of the purchase—not optional polish.
