Egoist Machines is building a portable personal-context layer for AI apps. The product decision is whether a person wants memory to travel with them—and whether they are comfortable approving each access.

## What it does

AI Passport lets users carry preferences, history and identity across AI applications. The current product page describes scoped access, user-visible permissions, receipts for reads and proposed writes, and a private-by-default consumer profile. [Egoist homepage](https://ego.ist/)

The developer page makes the model concrete: an app can ask for exact fields such as style preferences, sizes or budget, attach a purpose and duration, and receive only the approved context. ## Why I’d look closer

The product attacks a real annoyance: every assistant asks the same questions again, while each company builds a private profile that is hard to carry elsewhere. A permissioned memory layer could make personalization more portable without making the user hand over an entire history.

The founder context is unusually distribution-aware. The [YC profile](https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/egoist-machines) describes Erin McGurk’s social and public-sector strategy background and David Khachaturov’s product direction; the company’s current page is built around consumer claim-and-use behavior.

## What could make it the wrong choice

The hard part is not storing preferences. It is deciding which app deserves which field for which purpose, and making that decision understandable. Users should inspect retention, deletion, recovery, app verification, data residency, and what happens when a proposed memory is wrong.

The developer page says access is scoped and receipts are visible, but no independent security or privacy audit is claimed in the sources checked. The product is also early; the company is onboarding a new habit, not merely adding another login button.

## My editorial take

I would shortlist AI Passport for an agent-heavy consumer product that needs repeat context and wants to make consent visible. I would not integrate it to collect more data by default. The value is the control surface: exact fields, purpose, duration and a receipt a user can understand.
