Doomersion: level-matched language immersion

Doomersion turns short-form video scrolling into language practice by matching clips to a learner’s level and increasing difficulty over time.

Published · Updated

What it does

Doomersion is a language-learning app built around short-form video. It shows TikToks and other clips in a target language matched to the learner’s level, then gradually increases difficulty as the user scrolls. The YC profile describes it as immersion packaged in a feed; the current homepage links to the iOS and Android apps.

The fit is a learner who already spends time on short-form media but struggles to find comprehensible native content. Doomersion’s bet is behavioral: preserve the addictive feed loop while turning level-matched scrolling into repeated listening and reading exposure. That makes content quality, progression and recall more important than raw screen time.

Why I’d look closer

The product wedge is simple and memorable. Mostafa Afr’s YC biography says he learned Japanese through long-term immersion and built Doomersion after finding that general language apps were fun but not enough for real input. The company reports about 15,000 downloads in its first two weeks and says power users spend 3+ hours daily; those are company-reported engagement claims, not evidence of language proficiency.

The current site keeps the product promise narrow: short videos matched to level, with app-store access and no public pricing or detailed learning-efficacy material in the sources checked. The careers page says there are no open positions, which is not a product-status claim but reinforces that the public surface is still early.

What I’d ask

How is level matching calibrated, and how does the system handle slang, dialects, captions and culturally ambiguous clips? I’d test a beginner-to-intermediate progression with a fixed vocabulary/retention check, then compare time spent to actual comprehension. The app should make immersion easier without confusing scrolling volume for learning.

My editorial take

Doomersion is an interesting consumer-learning experiment because it starts from a habit people already have instead of asking them to adopt another lesson format. The test is whether the feed creates durable comprehension and recall after the novelty wears off.
