cmux is a free, open-source native macOS terminal built for running multiple AI coding agents at once. The buyer decision is whether a composable terminal with visible workspaces, notifications, browser automation, and a socket API is better for the team than a GUI orchestrator or a tmux-heavy setup.
What it does
cmux is built on Ghostty and adds vertical tabs, split panes, notification rings, an in-app browser, workspace metadata, session restore, and a CLI or Unix socket for automation. It works with terminal agents such as Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, and others, and can drive its browser and panes programmatically (cmux homepage; cmux getting started).

Why it fits
cmux is intentionally a primitive. It does not force one agent workflow; it makes many sessions visible, lets an agent trigger notifications or browser actions, and leaves orchestration to the developer. That is valuable when the bottleneck is attention—knowing which agent finished, which needs input, and what changed—rather than compute.
The tradeoff is that the user still owns the workflow. A team should resolve macOS fleet support, remote-host permissions, browser cookie boundaries, session-restore coverage, socket authentication, and how much orchestration it wants to build itself. The docs say arbitrary live process state is not checkpointed and unsupported terminal apps reopen as normal terminals (cmux getting started).
The founders' context fits the product: YC describes Wang as a Yale physics graduate with NASA JPL and Chess.com experience, and Chen as a Manaflow co-founder with prior Minion AI work (YC company profile).
Short version: cmux is a good fit for developers who want composable agent infrastructure on macOS. It is not a turnkey team manager; its value is the primitive layer.
