Cascade Space is building the communications layer that space companies usually end up rebuilding themselves.

## What it does

Cascade describes itself as a commercial alternative to the Deep Space Network. The [YC profile](https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/cascade-space) says its first ground station, Earth Station Zero, is planned to downlink data from the Moon in 2026, with a global network planned for 2028.

The company also has a software wedge. Its launch material describes Cascade Designer, a tool for spacecraft communication-system design, link margins, flight trajectories, and team collaboration.

| Fact | What the public source says |
| --- | --- |
| Buyer | Spacecraft and space-mission teams |
| Product | Ground-station network plus spacecraft communications design software |
| Development claim | Earth Station Zero is described as planned for lunar data in 2026 |
| Founder context | Jacob Portukalian is described with SpaceX, Tyvak, and Astra communications experience |

## Why it is interesting

Space communications has two problems: the infrastructure is scarce, and the design work is often trapped in spreadsheets and bespoke scripts. Cascade is attacking both.

The buyer can start with the software if the mission team needs to model link performance and keep design work current across engineers. The bigger promise is the ground-station network, where the value only appears if the hardware, coverage, scheduling, and data path work in the real mission.

The founder background maps directly to that problem. The YC profile describes Jacob Portukalian as an architect of communications systems at SpaceX, Tyvak, and Astra, with a team of space engineers.

## What I would resolve

Cascade Designer and the planned network represent different buyer decisions. A spacecraft team can evaluate software earlier than it can rely on a lunar or deep-space ground-station service.

The buyer also needs current station status, coverage, interfaces, service levels, and pricing. “Commercial alternative” is a useful position, not evidence that the alternative is already available for a given mission.

Short version: Cascade fits a space company that wants to replace brittle communication spreadsheets or needs a future ground network. The technical pedigree is relevant. The deployment timeline is the real decision.

## Cohort context

Cascade Space is listed in Spring 2025. In our 2026-09-18 directory snapshot, 15 of 143 listed companies in that cohort have YC’s primary industry label Industrials (10.5%). This is a current-directory comparison, not an original intake count or a performance ranking. [Nine-cohort dataset](https://mudpie.ai/research/yc-cohorts-2026-09-19.json).
