Better Auth makes a strong developer promise: keep authentication in your codebase, then add the infrastructure only when you need it.

## What it does

Better Auth is a framework-agnostic authentication framework for TypeScript. The [current site](https://better-auth.com/) lists email and password auth, social sign-on, sessions, organizations, passkeys, SSO, SCIM, plugins, and agent-auth features.

The business model has two layers. The open-source framework is free. The managed infrastructure adds a dashboard, audit logs, security detection, user management, directory sync, transactional messaging, and enterprise support.

| Fact | What the public source says |
| --- | --- |
| Buyer | TypeScript developers and teams building their own auth |
| Open-source layer | Framework, plugins, docs, and self-hosted application integration |
| Managed layer | Starter free, Pro $20/month, Enterprise custom |
| Current company event | The site links to an announcement that Better Auth is joining Vercel |

## Why it fits

Better Auth is for a team that wants control over the authentication model and database, not a black-box auth service. The docs and homepage emphasize code, plugins, type safety, and a framework-agnostic setup.

The managed layer gives the project a second buyer: a production team that wants self-hosted auth logic but does not want to build dashboards, audit logs, abuse detection, email, SMS, and enterprise identity features from scratch.

The founder background matches the product. YC describes Bereket Engida as a TypeScript developer and open-source contributor who built Better Call, Better Fetch, Loglib, and Better Auth. The company’s current site also links the Vercel transition directly. That transition is a company-published event and should be treated as current corporate context, not a promise about future product changes.

## What I would resolve

The build-versus-buy boundary matters. The framework lets a team own auth in its backend and database. The infrastructure layer introduces hosted services, usage limits, retention, support, and enterprise terms. A team needs to choose that boundary intentionally.

The public pricing page lists Pro at $20/month, with usage-based audit logs, security detections, email, SMS, SSO, directory sync, and add-ons. Those prices are current page observations, not a total cost estimate for a large production system.

Short version: shortlist Better Auth if developer ownership and an open TypeScript foundation matter. Choose the managed layer only when the operational features are worth adding a service boundary on top.
