Balance is an AI accounting firm for SMBs that want their books current enough to use. It fits businesses in the UK and Denmark—especially ecommerce, software, hospitality and professional services—that want an accountant accountable for the result without waiting until month-end to understand what happened.

## What it does

The product is a mix of automation and named human responsibility. [Balance’s homepage](https://getbalance.ai/) says its agent, Bea, categorizes transactions, reconciles accounts, matches documents and answers finance questions through Slack, WhatsApp or email. Accountants review the work and sign it off. The homepage says it supports VAT, annual accounts, tax, payroll, management accounts and cash-flow forecasting. That is a broader operating model than another dashboard that leaves the founder to interpret the numbers.

## Why I’d look closer

The company’s current material also gives the buyer a useful fit signal. It names workflows for marketplace fees and COGS, Stripe revenue recognition, delivery apps, work in progress and project profitability. It says more than 100 companies are trusted customers and shows stories from Birdie and Semper. Those are company-published claims and testimonials, not independent reviews. [The about page](https://getbalance.ai/about) says Balance started in Copenhagen and now supports UK and Danish businesses, with London and Copenhagen operations.

The founders have a credible problem connection. [The YC profile](https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/getbalance) describes Mathias Løvring as a former CFO who also ran an accountancy firm, Gus Levinson as an Imperial/Oxford maths and AI researcher, and Emil Munk as a product operator with McKinsey, Kapa and Encord experience. This is a team that appears to understand both the books and the software needed to keep them moving.

## What I’d ask

Which accounting systems are supported in each country? What does the named accountant actually own? How are exceptions escalated, and what does “real-time” mean when source systems lag? Public material is call-led rather than self-serve, and [the bounded public search](https://www.linkedin.com/company/getbalanceai) surfaced company-social material rather than an independent review. I would ask for a sample close, the handoff between Bea and the accountant, and a clear explanation of what happens when the ledger is wrong.

## My editorial take

Balance is interesting for a founder who wants a finance partner, not just bookkeeping software. The human sign-off is the feature. If you only need a cheap ledger export, this is probably more service than you want; if you are making decisions from stale numbers, the tighter loop is the point.
