What it does
Astor is an AI investment-advisor product for retail investors. The YC profile describes the original product as a personal AI investment analyst; the current homepage positions it as an SEC-registered AI investment advisor for busy professionals.
The fit is an active investor who wants context around the portfolio they actually own, not another news feed or generic stock-picking chat. Astor is most useful if it can explain a recommendation, show the underlying evidence and keep the user’s risk profile in the loop. It is not a substitute for understanding a product’s regulatory boundary or for making a user’s financial decision.
Why I’d look closer
The public product surface is unusually concrete. Astor says it can answer portfolio questions, surface news tied to holdings and talk through Roth-versus-401(k) questions. Its pricing page lists a Pro plan at $14.99/month with a $9.99 offer display, and Max at $39.99/month; Pro includes chat, portfolio insights and ten minutes of daily AI-advisor voice calls, while Max adds unlimited voice minutes. That is easier to test than a vague “AI wealth” promise.
The homepage reports $400M+ connected and 10,000+ users; those are company-reported product claims, not independent assets-under-management or performance evidence. Its trust section says Astor is SEC-registered, uses bank-level security, conducts professional penetration tests and has a SOC 2 Type II process in progress. Those are material status claims; I would verify the registration, scope, disclosures and SOC process rather than treat the badges as a guarantee.
The founders’ backgrounds fit the financial product. The YC biographies describe Bruno Koba with Stanford GSB, Nubank and monashees experience, and Daniel Tulha with Stripe, Robinhood and Amazon engineering experience.
What I’d ask
Which recommendations are advice versus education, how is risk tolerance captured, and what is logged when a user links or disconnects a brokerage? I’d test source citations, stale news, concentrated holdings and a “do nothing” scenario. I’d also review the SEC registration and SOC 2 scope before treating Astor as a financial-service provider rather than a portfolio explainer.
My editorial take
Astor is a credible fit for investors who want a portfolio-aware explanation layer. The price and product surface make it testable. The editorial bar is high: useful guidance must remain transparent and bounded, especially when the product speaks with the confidence of an advisor.
