ChatGPT Ad Units vs. Sponsored Agents: What's Live vs. What's Alpha

A dated comparison of standard ChatGPT ads, Sponsored Agents alpha and the separate ad-management features announced in September.

Published · Updated

Two things called "ChatGPT advertising" are at very different stages. Confusing them in a plan means promising a client — or yourself — something you can't currently buy.

Side by side

Standard ad unit Sponsored Agents
Status Self-serve beta, generally rolling out Limited alpha test
Who can access it Self-serve eligibility depends on the billing entity’s country; team/partner routes exist in some markets Select advertisers only; not accepting requests as of retrieval
Format Headline, copy, image, landing page below a response A labeled, separate conversation with a business's AI agent, opened from an ad
Buying CPM, CPC, or conversion-optimized (oCPC/oCPM) Not documented — alpha stage
Geography (as documented) Broad self-serve list incl. US, UK, most of EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, India, Brazil, Mexico US only, as of September 16, 2026
Application path Sign up at Ads Manager None published; OpenAI states it is not accepting early-access requests at this time

Don't merge Sponsored Agents with everything else in the same announcement

The September 16 post bundles Sponsored Agents with three other, more available items — easy to read as one "AI ads got bigger" story when they're not the same stage:

  • An Ads Manager plugin inside ChatGPT for creating/analyzing campaigns via prompts — described as rolling out, not alpha-gated.
  • AI-suggested ad copy/imagery inside Ads Manager, reviewed and approved by the advertiser before going live. This is distinct from the older "Suggested ad drafts" feature, which explicitly does not generate new AI copy — it prefills from existing site metadata only (Create Ads for ChatGPT Ads). Don't assume these are the same feature.
  • HubSpot and Shopify integrations — live at announcement for HubSpot and US Shopify merchants; international Shopify stated to start September 23, 2026.

Hypothetical planning exercise

A fictional founder, planning Q4 spend for a DTC brand, has to decide what goes on the roadmap:

  • In the plan: a standard ad-unit campaign, since the brand's billing entity (US-based) is on the self-serve availability list — check confirmed against the actual table, not assumed.
  • Not in the plan, this quarter: anything built around Sponsored Agents, since there's no application path and access is US-only, select-advertisers-only alpha.
  • Worth testing separately, lower stakes: the Ads Manager ChatGPT plugin, since it's described as rolling out rather than alpha-gated — but budget time to verify it's actually available on the account before relying on it for a client deliverable.

Checklist

  • Confirm your billing entity's country against the Ads Manager availability table — not the general "is ChatGPT Ads live" question.
  • Don't build a pitch or budget line around Sponsored Agents; there is currently no application process.
  • Separate "AI-suggested creative in Ads Manager" from "Suggested ad drafts" — they're different features with different capabilities.
  • Recheck the Sponsored Agents help-center page before making a commitment. This availability snapshot was checked September 19, 2026.

Method: Full text of four Help Center pages and two openai.com posts read September 19, 2026. The Q4-planning example is fictional and illustrates a decision process, not a real client engagement.

Next action: Check your own billing-entity country against the availability table before committing budget, and bookmark the Sponsored Agents page rather than searching for a sign-up form that doesn't currently exist.
